This beautiful dan tranh is made under supervision of Professor Nguyen Vinh Bao, former professor or Saigon Music Conservatory. Professor Vinh Bao is one of the finest dan tranh player in Vietnam. He has spent many years of research in instrument making and acoustics to improve the shape and sound quality of dan tranh. Prof. Nguyen Vinh Bao has made 17-, 19- and 21- string zithers with a sound board of Japanese wood (kiri paulownia) instead of Vietnamese wood (NGO DONG).
This dan tranh is custom-made using finest materials. The soundboard and backboard are both made of paulownia Ngo Dong. The frame is made of the beautiful Vietnamese barian kingwood Cam Lai. Professor Vinh Bao's dan tranh is slight bigger than the standard dan tranh. He has made improvement that the sound is a lot richer and louder than the standard ones. The string rings clean, resonant and long-lasting. The instrument is elegantly inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The instrument itself is a piece of beautiful Vietnamese art.

The scale of the 17-string dan tranh ranges over 3 octaves. First string is normally tuned in C3-D3, and the last string is tuned between D6-E6. It's in the scale of sol la do re mi sol la do re mi sol la do re mi sol la.
